Sanctuary Landscape Painting
I had this oil landscape mostly completed but it did not feel quite finished. I really enjoy painting land that looks very alive and fleshy; I think it helps us remember that we are connected to it and vice versa. The colors I used here are those I associate with the depiction of dreams. I kept coming back to the painting and finally realized that I saw these hidden doors into the hills as a sanctuary from what lies beyond, where the smoke of violence rises. This, then, is a calm, quiet place where one can find replenishment. It might look barren on the surface, but it is a place of renewal.
The original oil painting is 18 x 24"/46 x 61cm on cotton canvas\ with a traditional 3/4"/ profile.
