Ice Sun Landscape Painting
This painting of an imaginary landscape was very much inspired by the idea of the Mountains of Madness in the Lovecraft story. I read that when I was quite young, and the image of the steep mountains acting as a border and sort of veil of the alien land beyond in Antarctica really caught my fancy. This image isn't exactly like that in the story, but it is definitely related. I see this as a far icy land, apparently--and only apparently--uninhabited. I did my best to capture the sun as it appears in an ice fog. The foothills of the mountains show the marks of enormous waters in the distant past, the fingerprints of a past world.
The original oil painting is 18 x 36"/46 x 91cm on canvas with a traditional .75"/2cm profile.
