Listening to Trees

$ 590.00

Figures gather around a tree at night to listen to its stories. This is one of those paintings that arose from the paint rather than being planned. I picked out a tree shape from the paint. The figures also came out of the paint, and I resisted making them more "realistic." For one thing, I want figures that don't display gender, much less race. I want them to be more symbolic, place-setters for people. And that urge, to emphasize the symbolic and to create a sense of timelessness came to permeate the painting. I also went with the use of lines as a way of giving movement to the image.

The original watercolor painting is 15 x 22"/38 x 56cm on cotton archival paper and is ready to frame.
